Gimp, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, started out under the Unix derivatives as an excellent, open-source and free, program for similarly working with graphical media (drawing, painting, cropping, adjusting colors, etc). It is included in the repositories for all major Linux distributions. Gimp is also available for Windows. So if you want to do some serious photo-shopping beyond the quick and dirty corrections you probably do with e.g. Irfanview or XnView MP when managing your photo’s, you certainly should investigate whether Gimp could be your tool of choice.
The user interface used to be ‘different’ with different windows opening at the sime time for the image its self, and various toolboxes, but you can now also set it up to follow the more usual single window approach. Either way, given a little bit of time investment you will quickly find your way around and maybe even start expanding the toolbox with plug-ins for creating panorama’s (Pandora plug-in) or with different brushes, textures and filter effects beyond the already impressive packages in the standard setup.
